The bendix is the starter motor mechanism responsible for transmitting the electric motor's rotation to the combustion engine only during the instant of starting. It is a spare part aimed at those who detect abnormal noises on start-up or a starter motor that turns without managing to turn the engine over.
It consists of a helically splined pinion mounted on a one-way clutch, so that it advances and engages with the ring gear when the starter is activated, then automatically withdraws as soon as the engine starts and exceeds the starter motor's own speed, preventing the starter from continuing to turn under load.
The photo shows the metal pinion assembly, with the engagement teeth visible and the clutch body that allows one-way slippage, a compact element designed to be mounted directly on the starter motor shaft.
Its good condition is key to a clean, quiet start, since a worn bendix or one with damaged splines causes the pinion to fail to engage properly or to remain engaged after starting.
