This cylinder base gasket is an engine sealing component, needed by those undertaking cylinder removal, piston replacement or engine overhaul work who need to renew the seal between the crankcase and the cylinder base.
It is a flat gasket designed to seal the joint between both machined surfaces, preventing loss of compression and oil leaks in that area of the engine. As a sealing element subjected to heat and pressure, this type of gasket must always be replaced whenever the cylinder is removed, since it loses its sealing capability once taken off.
The photo shows a thin-profile gasket cut to follow the shape of the cylinder base, with the corresponding holes for the mounting studs and for the engine's internal passages, in the light-coloured material typical of flat engine gaskets.
Fitting a new gasket every time the cylinder is reassembled guarantees a proper seal between both surfaces, preventing leaks and keeping the engine's internal pressure within the intended values.
