Adjustment
The steering damper has three external adjustment possibilities, namely the adjustment of the damping valve (1), the high-speed valve (2) and the sweep valve (3), which regulate the damping range
.
Damper valve
The Öhlins or Scotts steering damper is supplied with the damping valve ( 1) which is set to a basic position which provides maximum basic damping. For Enduro and Motocross it is favourable to set the damping valve to position 7-8 from the fully clockwise position, depending on the terrain and the rider. Turning clockwise increases damping and turning counter-clockwise reduces damping.
NOTE: To avoid leakage of fluid, never open more than two whole turns. If damper pressure is off, i.e., position about 20 clicks counter clockwise, there will still be damping action in the event of fast movements because the high speed valve will come into action
High speed valve
The high speed valve (2) is set between 11/4 to 2 turns from the bottom position, suitable for enduro, motocross and rally. For all riding, the high speed valve must be screwed up at least 1 turn from the bottom. Turn clockwise to increase damping and anticlockwise to reduce it.
Damping sweep controls
The damping sweep controls (3) are located on each side of the damper body. Damping is in position 2 (12 o’clock), when delivered fröm Öhlins or Scotts. This setting is fitted for enduro, motocross and rally driving. NOTE: Both damping sweep controls must always be set in identical positions. Always use positions according to the clock.
Maintenance and inspection The steering damper is a precision instrument, with extremely fine tolerances. It is therefore essential that it is maintained in a correct manner. Maintenance and service should be carried out by an Öhlins or Scotts agent. After washing the motorcycle wipe clean and spray with all-round oil.NOTE: Never subject to direct high pressure flushing because water may otherwise penetrate the damper
Fluid and service
Ensure that there is no leakage of fluid and that there is no visible damage to the housing and mounts. Change the fluid regularly. In new dampers after 10 hours riding and then every 20 hours riding. If the steering damper needs service, Öhlins or Scotts agents have the proper tools and knowhow to solve all technical problems.
